Listed below are the camp offerings for 2008. Listings for the 2009 Arts in the Summer will be posted to this website in January 2009.

One-week camps for rising 6th – 10th graders
Time: Monday – Friday - Times as listed
We hope you will enjoy looking at our many new “Arts in the Summer” offerings for 2008! If your child will be attending both a morning and an afternoon class a supervised lunch time will be provided at no charge between 12:00 – 12:30.


 


 
 

ComedySportz Improvaganza!

June 23 - June 27
Spend the week playing games, talking gibberish and being silly! ComedySportz is a national, family-safe improve comedy troupe that promotes teamwork, positive attitudes, clear communication and just plain fun! Local animator and comedian, Dave Gau, will teach the basics of improv and a bunch of improve games throughout the week, culminating in a special student show at the ComedySportz Improv Theatre for family and friends at the end of the week!

Beginning/Intermediate Stained Glass

Cost: $165

June 23 -27

Artisans Desi Fleming and Becky Ratliff will be using the copper foil technique to create stained glass pieces. We will start with a project we do together to learn the tools and materials necessary to complete a stained glass piece. This allows the teacher the chance to know various skill levels and assist each student appropriately. From there students will pick an additional project that fits their individual taste. All materials will be provided.

Clay Masks

Cost: $130

July 7 - 11

The power of African masks will give students a spring board to investigate their own personal symbols. Art instructor Amore Wren designed this project to focus on individual identity. Class work will emphasize basic hand building techniques while encouraging students to visualize their ideas. Each student will complete a clay mask ready for display. This class is for the beginner or somewhat experienced beginner.

Metal & Faux Glass Sculpture

Cost: $165

July 7 - 11

Join Desi Fleming and Becky Ratliff for a week of metal play! We will use sculpture wire and a flexible paint media to create abstract forms that resemble blown glass. We will also learn the relief sculpture technique of repousse’ to create metal creatures. All materials will be provided.

Fused Glass & Wire Wearable Art

Cost: $100

July 14 - 18

Join us for a week of learning basic fused glass techniques and chain making to create fun and colorful glass pieces. We will create wire chain maille (interlinking metal rings to create a mesh structure) to display our glass work as wearable art. This is not a girl’s only class. Fused art is as individual as the artist that creates it and offers many options for creativity. Come join Desi Fleming and Becky Ratliff in this fun and creative class!

Set Design

Cost: $100 per week

July 21 – 25 & July 28 – Aug 1.

Come join us for one or both weeks of this fun camp. Set designer Mo Bennett will give students a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to construct a set and build props for the “Luther Under the Lights” production of The Boy Friend. Students will gain experience with using light construction materials and painting backdrops.

Media Blitz

Aug 4 -Aug 8.

Experience a variety of mixed media techniques and materials in a fun painterly way! Students will create unique 3-dimensional paintings and sculptural works of art in this fun, fast paced class. Cindy McNamara, Hanover County art teacher will be the instructor

Soccer Skills

Cost: $130

Aug 11 - Aug 15

In Soccer Skills Camp students will be exposed to the basic skills of soccer such as dribbling, trapping, shooting, heading, and tackling as well as offensive and defensive strategies. Games will be modified to maximize participation and assist students with learning all positions that are taught. Some activities include “Soccer Cone Tag”, “Moving Goal Soccer”, and “Soccer Dribbling Contests”. Sportsmanship will be discussed and emphasized in all activities.

Making Multiples

Aug 11 - Aug 15

Come discover printmaking! Students will create a portfolio of art prints using the following methods: intalio, silkscreen, linoleum block and collograph. This class will be taught by art instructor, Cindy McNamara.
