Junior Arts in the Summer

 


For rising 2nd - 5th graders

Time: Monday - Friday - 8:30-12:00 noon

Listed below are the camp offerings for 2008. Listings for the 2009 Junior Arts in the Summer will be posted to this website in January 2009.


In 2008 we offer more one-week camps than ever. In most weeks, two different subjects share the morning.

An Extended Day Option is available for all camps ending at 12:00 noon. The Extended Day program includes lunch and afternoon activities for your camper until 5:45 p.m. A supervised morning time is also included from 7:00 – 8:30 a.m. at no additional cost. Space is limited, so please register early to ensure your child’s place for these outstanding camp experiences.

One-Week Camp Sessions
Batik & Flag Football
Cost: $ 130

June 16 - 20
With Extended Day  $240

Don’t resist! Learn the resist process that is sure to amaze your friends and reveal your genius. Art instructor Amore Wren will provide students with a safe batik technique that is colorful and permanent. The batik process offers immense possibilities for artistic freedom -- and students will have the freedom to create wall hangings, pillows, and more in this anything goes class that no one will be able to resist! In Flag Football students will be exposed to skills such as throwing, catching, running, avoiding, tackling (removing an opponent’s flag) as well as offensive and defensive strategies. Games will be modified to maximize participation and assist students with learning all positions that are taught. Some activities include “Gladiator Ball”, “ Two on Two”, and “Pass, Kick, and Run Competition”. Sportsmanship will be discussed and emphasized in all activities.
Japan Adventure & Texture & Pattern Play

June 23 - 27 
With Extended Day  $240

Join us on a trip to Japan to learn Japanese culture, language, art, geography, history, and more! We will go on an exciting journey as we explore this fascinating country of many islands! In Texture and Pattern Play Camp we will go to the art studio to create a wide variety of rubbings and textures. We will learn about patterns and how to use them to create details our art. Students will use their textured pieces to create different shapes and patterns that create a colorful fun design for a 2-D paper creature that is kid size. This class will be team taught by artisans Desi Fleming and Becky Ratliff.

More Power to You

June 30 -July 3
With Extended Day $225

MadScience offers this camp for students who want to explore the many different forms of ENERGY in the world around us: from the star power in our own sun, to the surprising potential from chemical reactions, to the current in household electricity and the natural resources of planet Earth. After the camp students will be super CHARGED with knowledge. They may be SHOCKED that they learned so much while having fun.
Set Design for Dear Edwina Jr. & Conditioning & Agility Camp
Cost: $ 130

July 7 - 11
With Extended Day $240

Artist, Mo Bennett, will give students a behind the scenes look at what it takes to construct a set and build props for the musical Dear Edwina Jr. They will have hands-on experience with using light construction materials and painting backdrops. In Conditioning and Agility Camp students will participate in activities with jump ropes, agility ladders, hurdles, exercise tubing/dynabands, and core stability balls. Students will also use pedometers to accumulate “steps to success”. Student logs will be kept as each student strives to get at least 4,000 steps before the end of each session. Team sports emphasizing total pedometer steps versus traditional scoring will also be utilized. This class will be taught by Ken Perrault.
Macramé & Fused Glass Creatures

July 14 - 18

With Extended Day $240

Tying knots has been done since man needed to attach one thing to another. Sailors (and pirates) wouldn’t have made it without this skill. In this class you will learn from artist Mo Bennett to tie several basic knots and put them together to make something cool. How about a belt, or a pouch, a decorative wall hanging, or maybe one of those very popular hemp necklaces? Add a few beads and you’re good to go! Students will create fused mosaic glass pieces to make their own mosaic creatures. Each student will combine pre-cut glass pieces to design their own unique fused glass design. Using their fused unique designs along with class supplied fused glass students will design their own whimsical mosaic creatures. This class will be team taught by artisans, Desi Fleming and Becky Ratliff.
It’s Getting Hot in Here! & You Can Draw Animals

July 21 - 25
With Extended Day $240

What’s in a greenhouse? Join us as we make our own and learn how they work. But what happens when it gets too hot? Let’s find out as we explore our planet Earth and the great big greenhouse that it is in. With teacher, Leslie Basso, leading we will learn about, and take part in, experiments that teach us what is happening as our Earth’s atmosphere is changing. Yes you can!! local artist, Michelle Hoffman, will teach you the steps every artist must learn to draw animals. Once you learn to create proportions and created detail, you can draw any animal. We will learn how to easily insert these skills so your drawings of animals will come alive. We will experiment with different media, such as pencils, scratch board and paints. So think about your favorite animals; and remember there is a jungle out there!
Travel the World with Your Tastebuds & Dancing Around the World

July 28 - August 1

With Extended Day $240

Come join us as we take a culinary journey around the world with teacher and chef Leslie Basso. We will begin by gathering our supplies, decorating an apron, and learning the basics of cooking. We will be prepared to experience a new country each day through our tastebuds. Together we will prepare a native dish, sample our creations and hopefully have some leftovers to share. Oh what a journey! In this camp students will explore the cultural heritage of communities around the world. The curriculum will emphasize the classical and folk dance forms, traditions and gestures of many countries. Students will develop strength, flexibility, coordination, and a shared sense of cultural heritage as they tour the world with dance instructor, Megan Vernon!
Yoga & Dimensional Remix

August 4 - 8

With Extended Day $240

Can you put your foot behind your head or touch your toes? How can you make a bridge with your entire body? Learn about yoga stretches and poses like those, and more, from crocodile to crow. Richmond Yoga instructor, Megan Vernon, will help you discover how much fun it is stretch your mind, body and imagination with yoga. In Dimensional Remix class students will uncover the storyteller within using a mixed-media pallet that includes glass, bottle caps, plastic toys, mirrors, buttons, costume jewelry and found objects. The curious student will be encouraged to create two and three-dimensional art that explores the rhythm and movement in nature, color, texture, form, and composition. Presented by artist, Amore Wren, this will be a fanciful, fun-filled remix of diverse mediums that any experience level will enjoy.

With Extended Day $265

MadScience offers this camp for students who want to Discover – Create – Invent! Each day campers will be given a series of challenges they must overcome using basic materials, simple machines, tips from world famous inventors and the most important thing of all – their minds. Because of the team-based approach to problem solving these challenges, this camp is never the same twice.
